Pre-COVID, my sister and her husband drove to my home for a party I was throwing. They neared my driveway right as my friends and I were releasing confetti-filled balloons high into the sky to signify the letting go of old dreams and the making space for new ones.
“What are they doing?” my brother-in-law asked. “A balloon release,” my sister shared. “Welcome to your first J. party. There is always a purpose, brand, interactive station and alliteration… thus tonight’s “Desserts and Dreams” theme.
For better or worse, I am energized by throwing purpose parties. For fun, I create goal-setting mind maps, read about the latest business trends, and vision board all the ideas swirling around in my mind. While these activities enliven my spirit, I have learned they do not always evoke the same response from others. (Shocking, I know.)
At first, I thought there was something wrong with me. Now I realize there is beauty in my originality… just like there is in yours!
Each one of us is perfectly and uniquely wired with gifts, talents, and passions that are needed to make the world go-round. Often, we just have to gain comfort in our own skin… and appreciate the skins of others!
1. Steward, don’t stifle, your originality. That’s what makes you beautiful. Your gift is needed, and serves a purpose in our world!
2. Think less about where you fit, and more about what fits you.
3. Celebrate and support other ways of seeing and interacting with the world. Perhaps Dr. Seuss summed it up best: “You are you. Now isn’t that pleasant?”
Your friend,
J.
